Your Adirondack Forest Preserve threatened with destructive motorized use - Action needed by Monday, August 2

Protect the Adirondacks has decided to make an all-out effort to oppose an amendment to the Jessup River Wild Forest Plan because it would increase the use of snowmobiles in a major way and begins what is essentially a road building program in our Forever Wild Forest Preserve. Please send comments in opposition to the Jessup River Wild Forest amendment to the APA and other officials, stating your very strong objections to the Plan.

    COMMUNITY CONNECTOR SNOWMOBILE TRAILS
    News Release
    Wednesday, 21 July 2010
STOP New Snowmobile Roads in the Adirondack Park

The Department of Environmental Conservation proposes to amend the Jessup River Wild Forest Unit Management Plan to allow the construction of new roads for motorized recreation in that unit. We believe that carving up the landscape with 3-ton excavation machines to accommodate large snowmobile grooming machines is road construction, not trail building, and violates the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan. The Jessup River amendment would destroy the wild character of lands the Adirondack Park Agency is charged to protect on behalf of all New York citizens, and must not be approved. Please write to APA Chairman Curt Stiles and tell him to disapprove the proposed Jessup River UMP amendment at the following address: NYS Adirondack Park Agency, PO Box 99, 1133 NYS Route 86, Ray Brook, NY 12977.

An Appraisal of the Adirondack Park Regional Assessment Project (APRAP)
    News Release
    Monday, 28 June 2010
In June 2009, the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages (AATV) released a report that profiles the 103 municipalities that comprise the Adirondack Park. One oft-cited interpretation of that report asserts that the fundamental reasons why some Park communities are in trouble are the extensive amounts of State-owned Forest Preserve and a regulatory environment that constrains economic activity. PROTECT’s concerns about that dominant interpretation prompted two of its Board members to conduct a critical appraisal of the study. They suggest that the Adirondack Park is actually a net community asset rather than a net liability.

Protect the Adirondacks! and the Adirondack Mountain Club filed a lawsuit this week in state Supreme Court in Albany to require the Adirondack Park Agency (APA) to adhere to state law and to classify a state-owned wilderness canoe route in the heart of the Adirondacks. PROTECT has also submitted a letter to Governor David Paterson expressing concern over a pattern of State policy decisions which could negatively impact the future of the Adirondack Park.
