Wilderness Proclamation Announced
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the New York City Council have issued a press release and proclamation (145KB PDF) to honor the 40th anniversary of the National Wilderness Act.
The proclamation and press release recognize the significance of federal Wilderness areas near New York City as well as State Wilderness areas, part of the State Forest Preserve in the Catskill and Adirondack Parks.
It also recognizes New York City and State residents who were 19th and 20th century pioneers in wilderness preservation, and the influence of New York State's "forever wild" provision in the New York State Constitution on the author of the National Wilderness Act, Howard Zahniser.
The proclamation request was promoted by the Campaign for America's Wilderness and the Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks, with support from the Adirondack Council, Natural Resources Defense Council and Residents Committee to Protect the Adirondacks.
