Public Navigation Rights
on Waterways of New York State: What are they?

The Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks has issued "Public Navigation Rights in New York State: Questions and Answers,"(pdf file PDF 267KB) a slim, easily read and informative fifteen-page brochure about the common law right of public travel on New York's freshwater rivers, streams, lakes and other waterways that are navigable-in-fact.

The questions and answers are designed to illuminate the legal nature of this right and to provide information about the circumstances under which it may be exercised.
