2013 Optional Fecal Coliform Registration Form
Adirondack Lake Assessment Program (ALAP)1
The Adirondack Watershed Institute (AWI) of Paul Smith’s College in partnership with AdkAction.org (www.AdkAction.org)
About the Program: Participants in the Adirondack Lake Assessment Program have the opportunity to test for fecal coliform this summer. A complete description of the importance of this test is found on the last page of this document. The Department of Health regularly monitors water quality at swim and other public access areas for dangerous bacteria, notably fecal coliform, but it is up to private land owners or lake associations to monitor private watershed areas. ALAP has not performed fecal coliform testing in the past, partly because water samples for fecal coliform testing must be analyzed within six hours of collection. Thanks to AdkAction.org we have an intern available this summer to bring samples from ALAP volunteers directly to the AWI laboratory for analysis. Samples are still collected by volunteers but are then handed off to the AdkAction.org intern who delivers the samples to the AWI laboratory. Fecal coliform samples are optional and separate from the normal ALAP monthly samples.
How are samples taken? After your registration form has been received, bottles and further information regarding sampling protocol will be sent to the address noted on the form. Samples are collected by the monitor for the lake stations noted on one of the dates that the AdkAction.org intern will be in that area. The monitoring volunteer places the samples on ice and the AdkAction.org intern brings them to the AWI laboratory. There will be multiple dates in June, July and August for sampling.
What are the costs? The cost is $35 per sample. As noted on the registration form; for one station (sample) collected for one month the cost is $35. For one station collected for two months the cost is $70. For one station collected for three months the cost is $105. Also, if you sign up for two stations for one month the cost is $70, two stations for two months the cost is $140, two stations for three months the cost is $210, etc. The $35 per sample cost covers the sample bottle, laboratory analysis, and postage. The cost of delivery of the sample by a field technician and the mileage charge are covered by AdkAction.org.
How do we sign up? To sign up for fecal coliform testing just fill out the attached registration form and mail it to the address on the form or the form can be sent electronically to the email address also noted on the bottom of the registration form. When we receive your registration, bottles and further information will be sent to the address noted.
