Saratoga Outdoors donates $25,000 to Protect the Adirondacks through the 1% for the Planet Program
In 2024, Protect the Adirondacks joined 1% for the Planet. We were sponsored by Saratoga Outdoors, a popular outdoor clothing and equipment store on Broadway in Saratoga Springs. The store’s founder, John Nemjo, is on PROTECT’s Board and he is committed to 1% for the Planet.
The goal of 1% for the Planet is for participating businesses to donate 1% of their annual sales to environmental non-profit organizations to help them do their work to protect the planet. This program was started in 2002 and has grown and signed up thousands of businesses. So far over $655 million has been donated to help environmental work and causes around the world in 110 countries.
Saratoga Outdoors generously awarded over $24,000 to Protect the Adirondacks in 2024 and awarded us $25,000 in December 2025. This is critical general support funding that can be used to support staff and our core programs.
“We are proud supporters of Protect the Adirondacks through our 1% For The Planet program here at Saratoga Outdoors where we pledge 1% of gross sales to environmental organizations such as this. PROTECT receives the lion’s share of these funds because of their dedicated work so close to home to ensure that the wild nature of the beloved Adirondacks remains intact for generations to come,” said John Nemjo, Founder and Owner of Saratoga Outdoors.
“We are tremendously grateful to Saratoga Outdoors, it’s great staff and patrons, and to John Nemjo for their incredible generosity. This kind of support is vital to grassroots advocacy groups like Protect the Adirondacks and we will use to support our work to protect and defend The Adirondack Park,” said Claudia Braymer, Executive Director of Protect the Adirondacks.

1% for the Planet started in 2002 after a fishing trip on the Madison River in 2001 where Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, dreamed up the idea for 1% for the Planet. Their dream started a movement.
Today, over 5,200 businesses participate in 1% for the Planet who contribute to thousands of qualified environmental groups. Protect the Adirondacks is asking its members to see if the company that you own or work for participates in 1% for the Planet, and if you are a participant, we encourage you to recommend support for Protect the Adirondacks.
